Humantay Lake takes its name from the nearby snow-capped mountain (Humantay, 5,473 m) and is considered one of the most beautiful and sacred lakes in Cusco. Its turquoise waters, framed by the snowy peaks of Salkantay (6,270 m), speak for themselves about why it is so popular.
Besides the travelers who visit the lake on a day trip, more adventurous travelers take on the “Salkantay Trek”, a 5-day, 4-night hike that connects to Machu Picchu and offers the chance to visit this lake along the way.
Our adventure to Humantay Lake begins with pickup at your hotel at 5:00 am, followed by a 2-hour drive to the town of Mollepata.
Here we will enjoy a delicious breakfast, then continue by road for another hour to the village of Soraypampa, where we begin the hike to Humantay Lake. Along the way we will have the chance to admire from afar the imposing Apus Salkantay and Humantay (the Apus are Inca deities or protective mountain spirits).
The ascent from Soraypampa to Humantay Lake takes approximately 2 hours; horses can be rented as an option if you feel tired. The hike is rated easy to moderate, and all the effort is rewarded with a magical view of the lake. There we will have plenty of time to take photos and make a brief offering to the Apus. We will then begin our descent from Humantay Lake to the village of Soraypampa, which takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Our transport will be waiting to take us back (about 1 hour) to the town of Mollepata, where a delicious buffet lunch awaits us. After lunch we will return to the city of Cusco, arriving at around 5:30 pm.
