The 4-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is ideal for those who love adventure and long hikes. If you are looking to experience the best of the Salkantay route, including a close encounter with the Apus, the sacred mountains, this is a journey on which you will discover just how exciting it is to reach Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the world. The Salkantay Trek is full of unique landscapes: mountains, lakes, glaciers, high Andean valleys and tropical valleys, and of course, at the end of the journey, a visit to Machu Picchu.

Along the way you will also experience local traditions such as coffee preparation and a coffee tasting in the town of Santa Teresa, and with your guide you will enjoy truly unique experiences.

Itinerary

  1. Pick-up at your hotel in Cusco between 5:00 and 5:30 am. We drive to Mollepata, where we stop for breakfast, and then continue one more hour by car to Soraypampa, where the hike begins. We walk for about 2 hours up to Humantay Lake, where you will have free time to take photos and explore the site. We then descend for 2 hours to the Quiswarniyoc campsite to enjoy a nutritious lunch followed by a siesta. In the afternoon we take a short hike to the Salkantay viewpoint to watch the sunset, then return to camp for tea and dinner. You will spend the night at the MOUNTAIN SKY HUT, our exclusive campsite.

  2. Wake-up call at 5:00 am with a cup of coca tea. After breakfast we begin the 3-hour climb to the Salkantay Pass, then descend for 2 hours to Wayracmachay for lunch. From there it is 3 more hours to Chaullay, where we camp. Tea time, dinner and a good night's rest in our Andean huts.

  3. Wake-up call at 6:00 am with coca tea, followed by breakfast. At about 7:30 am we set off from Chaullay on a 5-hour hike to La Playa, where we have lunch. We then take a vehicle to Hidroeléctrica (about an hour and a half) and from there walk 3 hours along the railway to Aguas Calientes. On arrival at the hotel you can shower and explore the town. Dinner at about 7:00 pm in a restaurant in Aguas Calientes, followed by preparations for the visit to Machu Picchu the next day.

  4. Today we visit Machu Picchu in the morning. Depending on your physical condition you can choose to go up on foot or by bus. The walk up takes about 1 hour, so we recommend buying a bus ticket for the ride up, which costs $12 USD per leg.
