WAQRAPUKARA is a pre-Inca archaeological site located at 4,300 m.a.s.l. This little-known complex near the city of Cusco served a religious and ceremonial purpose from pre-Inca and Inca times, functioning as an oracle or a site for cosmological observation. It is surrounded by a vast stone forest where rock paintings left by the earliest civilizations of this part of the Cusco region can still be seen.

Itinerary

We begin with pick-up at your hotel between 3:00 and 3:30 am and drive to the village of Ttio, where we enjoy a hearty breakfast before continuing another 45 minutes to the trailhead at Punta Carretera, in the Pitumarca sector. The hike in takes between 2 and 2½ hours, with views of the Apurímac Canyon along the way. On reaching the archaeological complex of Waqrapukara we have lunch and a guided visit, passing Inca-style terraces and the funerary structures located at the rear of the complex. Once the visit is over, we hike back along a zigzagging trail to the starting point and return to Cusco. On the way back we make a brief stop in Ttio for tea time and, if the local community is available, to see some examples of their crafts.
On our return we drop you off at the main square of Cusco at approximately 7:00 pm.
