The Sacred Valley of the Incas lies in the Peruvian Andes and the edge of the high jungle. It is formed by numerous rivers that flow down through gorges and small valleys, and is home to many archaeological monuments and indigenous villages in the provinces of Urubamba and Calca. The Incas prized this valley for its special geographical and climatic qualities. Thanks to the richness of its soil it was one of their main centers of production, and it is where the finest corn in Peru is grown.
The Sacred Valley of the Incas has been declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation. Scattered throughout the valley are beautiful colonial towns whose blend of cultures is reflected today in their architecture, art and living traditions. Here you will find Chinchero and its weavers, Pisac and its craft market, cosmopolitan Urubamba, Ollantaytambo with its fortress and its living Inca town, Maras with its dazzling salt mines and Moray with its agricultural experimentation terraces. Across the Sacred Valley, various communities have created rural and experiential tourism products that amaze locals and visitors alike. Each of them is a world in itself, and together they offer a unique way to discover the most traditional region of the South American Andes.
