About this tour

Cusco is a city located in the Cusco region, in southern Peru. It was the capital of the ancient Inca Empire and is considered the most important city of Inca culture. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983 and has a population of around 600,000 inhabitants. The city of Cusco was the most important urban center of the Tawantinsuyu Empire. Founded by the Inca Manco Cápac, it was made up of palaces, temples and kanchas (dwellings), with streets and plazas surrounded by extensive areas devoted to agriculture and crafts. It reached its peak under the Inca Pachacútec in the 15th century. When the Spanish conquered the Inca Empire in 1534, they built the Spanish city on top of the Inca enclosures and buildings. The city of Cusco has been recognized as a cultural heritage site for its outstanding universal value, representing a masterpiece of human creative genius. It is a unique testimony to the Tawantinsuyu Empire, which exercised political, religious and administrative control over several countries of South America between the 15th and 16th centuries. The city represents 3,000 years of autonomous indigenous cultural development in the southern Andes of Peru. Cusco also offers a unique testimony to the urban and architectural achievements of the political, economic and cultural settlements of the pre-Columbian era in this region. It is a representative example of the meeting of two distinct cultures, Inca and Spanish, which produced a remarkable cultural syncretism and shaped a unique urban structure and architectural form.
