History of Cusco

From its origins and throughout its history, the city of Cusco has held a prominent place in the cultural development of Peru. Founded between the 11th and 12th centuries, Cusco became the capital of the Inca Empire and the hub of the great territorial expansion of Tawantinsuyu. The Spanish founding of Cusco took place in March 1534, by order of Francisco Pizarro.

During the Viceroyalty, grand mansions, imposing churches and convents filled with works of art were built on Inca foundations. It was in Cusco that Hispanic-Andean culture reached its fullest expression, both in its architecture and in its people, who still proudly preserve their customs and traditions. All of this is set in a wonderful natural environment.
