The traditional Inti Raymi route takes place at three important historic sites in Cusco.
1. Qorikancha or Temple of the Sun, where the Inti Raymi route begins with the ceremony known as the “Greeting to the Sun.”
This first part opens with the sound of the pututus (conch-shell trumpets) and the entrance of the acllas, musicians and dancers, followed by the reception of the Inca; the first rituals take place here. Approximate duration: 1 hour.
2. Cusco's Main Square or Huaqaypata is the second venue of Inti Raymi. Here the ceremony “Meeting of the Times and Coca Leaf Ceremony” takes place, where the Inca and his entourage gather at the great ushnu, or ceremonial stage.
This second part begins with the entrance of the musicians, which opens the whole performance. The Inca then proceeds to the main altar set up in the center of the square and begins with a greeting to the Sun God. Next, the provincial mayor of Cusco appears and meets the Inca, who presents him with a quipu as a symbol of organization, work and commitment. Finally, the Inca and the Qoya circle the Plaza de Armas before heading to the last venue of the ceremony, Sacsayhuamán.
This performance is mostly watched standing. Approximate duration: 1 hour.
3. Esplanade of Sacsayhuamán is the third venue and the central ceremony of Inti Raymi, as most of the staging takes place here. It begins with the entrance of the Qoya and the Inca, accompanied by dances, music and chants, followed by the central ceremony with the appearance of the chiefs of the four suyus, who report on the state of their regions. Finally, the Inca begins the offering rite, sacrificing a llama in honor of the Sun God. Approximate duration: 2 hours.
The first and second performances are free, so try to arrive early, as there will certainly be large crowds. Location of the Inti Raymi Stands
The VIP area consists of three stands, which offer the best views of the festival.
- Orange Stand: one of the best and most sought-after areas to watch Inti Raymi, as it is right in front of the ushnu, or stage. From this area you will definitely be able to see every stage of the performance. Capacity: 1,768 people.
- Blue Stand: capacity of 1,188 people.
- Green Stand: capacity of 810 people.
